“Could the werewolf be Desmond?” Kate asked immediately after Calder was finished. The fire was still burning between them. The sky had grown dark above them from late evening into night.

“No,” he answered. “We left him more human than monster, and he doesn’t fit the description. Garvores don’t have fur. They’re not connected.”

“Okay,” Kate nodded, only partially convinced. She tried to remind herself that she might be looking for trouble where there wasn’t any instead of looking objectively at the situation. Still, when they went to sleep that night, she couldn’t rid herself of the feeling that she was missing something.
